Big Post Coming Soon

Sorry it has taken me so long to get a new blog post online, I have been working on a new review for Classroom Management software. I will be looking at a few different pieces of software available and rate/comment on them in 4 different areas price, ease of setup, ease of use, functionality.

RIP Marco Giovengo

I just read one of the most touchingly true blogs, the main reason it was so touching is I knew the subject personally. Marco was not only  a Brother to me in Phi Sigma Kappa, he was also a great friend and amazing person. I am a better person to have met him, but I will never be close to half the man he was.

Here is a link to the blog, done by one of Marcos closest friends Danny: http://shutdownsportscorner.blogspot.com/2012/03/remembering-marco-giovengo.html

DAMN PROUD!

Rest in peace Bro (334)

HTML 5 DRM?

You read that correct. Developers from Microsoft, Netflix, and Google (Yes Google of all people) recently proposed a method to add Digital Rights Management (DRM) to HTML5. This would require a piece of hardware or a new firmware to decrypt the stream from the services server. Basically for the not-so technical audience this means that services like Netflix that stream videos to users would be able to continue the DRM they use now with Flash/Silverlight but converted into the Opensource world of HTML5.

Many members of the open source community are against this proposal including Chris Pearce from Mozilla. What is your opinion? Comment below and let me know.

Windows 8

This post is going to be a review of Windows 8. I currently have Windows 8 running in a Virtual Machine.

Specs:

Windows Version: Windows 8 Developer Preview

Build:

Memory: 3514 MB

Virtual Machine Host: Windows 7 Professional using Virtual Box

Review:

General: After booting Windows 8 up the first thing you will notice during setup is the ability to login using a Windows Live ID. The login screen for Windows  8 is defiantly made for a touch interface. To login you must slide the cover up then enter your password. After logging in you will come to the new “Metro” style start page. My first opinion of this was very negative. After some time working with this OS, the new look has grown on me. The main problem I still have with it is the fact that mouse navigation is still very difficult.

Applications: Your favorite applications are still compatible with Windows 8! The first thing I did was install Mozilla Firefox, and it runs very smooth, especially considering this OS is running virtually. But enough about backward apps. Windows 8 comes with its own collection of applications. My two favorite so far are Tweet@rama and Socialite. Tweet@rama is a Metro style app that provides an integrated desktop experience for Twitter. And Socialite is a similar app for Facebook.

Games: There are also a few games included in this build, however I have not played them enough to provide a review so I will leave that up to you.
Rating:  (1-10 [10 is highest])

Interface: 5

Comments: The interface of the desktop the same as Windows 7 except the, for lack of a better word, bland Start button

Animations: 8

Applications: 9

Overall: 8

I’m Back!

First of all I would like to apologize to everyone, I haven’t posted in awhile. This post is going to have multiple parts under the theme of Computer Security so bear with me.

1) I would like everyone to read this post by a fellow student of mine at Robert Morris University, Andrew Trapp. This post is a review of a very nice program that will help keep your system secure. The post can be found at http://saberdragongbm.blogspot.com/2012/01/review-3-secunia-psi.html or at the shortened version –> (http://goo.gl/ij06N).

2) If you are reading this I have to assume you know a little bit about technology. If this is true than I hope you are using either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. As you may know I am a Mozilla Rep, so here is my shameless plug for Firefox (Download: Fast, Fun, Awesome) If you do in fact use these more secure alternatives to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer then you can bump up your security even more! For a list of great add-ons visit http://trevormreed.com/add-ons

That is all I have for now, thanks for reading!

New Site Launched

Well, here we are at the new trevormreed.com! I decided that hosting this blog on my own server would be better than on blogspot. So I purchased my domain name with NameCheap and here I am. New features will be coming to the site very soon. Along with this blog I also plan on implementing a live support system, for those of you who have technical issues, so you can chat live with me to work out any issues you may have. Also for those of you at Robert Morris University, keep your eyes out for the Internet Security Forum, sponsored by SITAC and Mozilla at Robert Morris University coming to campus this month. There will be free Mozilla gear and there will be SITAC members on site to answer all of your questions about keeping your self secure online in the new year.

Happy New Year :)

Stop SOPA

This is going to be a very short post, I just wanted to make sure everyone aware of the insane and unconstitutional things going on in congress right now. There are two bills currently circulating that if passed will ruin the world as we know it. These bills are SOPA and PIPA, these laws are being hurried thorough under the assumption that they will stop piracy. News flash they won’t. All they will do is take away our constitutional rights given to us by the 1st amendment to our constitution. I urge each and every one of you to go to http://americancensorship.org/ and write your congressmen and express your concern in our future.

Asus Eee Pad Slider

This week I had the pleasure of demoing the Asus Eee Pad Slider. I had reservations going in because I had heard bad things about Honeycomb OS (Android 3.1). However after getting to use the OS this week I learned that while Honeycomb does have its downfalls, I do not hold that against the device as a whole. I an going to talk about each of the features I enjoyed or had issues with.

Keyboard: The keyboard on this tablet feels alittle cramped at first, however getting used to it is quite easy. The only problem I have with the keyboard is sometimes it skips letters, so you have to go back and type over, but this is not a deal-breaker for me because the on screen keyboard is still available and, in the Android Fashion, quite accurate.

Screen: This 10.1″ screen is in my opinion the perfect size for a tablet. It allows for portability while still allowing for productivity. The detail that this screen provides continues to blow my mind.

Overall: I would highly recommend this tablet, especially for people who need to have quick access to apps/web services. This would be a great device for Network Administrators to quickly perform and record maintanence in the field.

P.S. This post was written using the Eee Pad Slider :)
